As a freelance makeup artist I was often feeling the pressure to stockpile when I found a shade that worked well for many of my clients, fearing it may be discontinued. So I do not like to take away the shades my clients use as their go-to shades over the years. Sometimes I have had to alter the shade due to ingredient availability. However, in the beginning stages in 2004, I decided that I wanted to create staples that would be a constant in my clients’ lives, carrying them through school, travel, marriage, babies, life’s milestones, unforeseen tragedies, and all the many seasons of life. Through my own struggles I have found that that one tried and true lip gloss shade can be surprisingly comforting when my life has felt like it is in limbo.
I have done my best to create a full spectrum or range of colour, including the most popular colours that I would make for clients when I worked in spas. I do miss creating new colours together with clients and watching their faces light up as I packaged the shade right on the spot. Something that I found a little stressful in the city is that everyone was always in such a hurry. I allowed myself to take on my clients’ stress without knowing it. I reached a point of burn out where I just felt pulled too many different directions at the same time. It is like that quote by Harry Connick Jr in hope floats. “You’re talking about the american dream. You find something you love and twist and torture it, trying to find a away to make money at it. You can spend a lifetime doing that. At the end, you can’t find a trace of what you started out loving. What did you start out loving? For me it was doing things right. That’s all. That’s why I came back here. So I could live the way I wanted.” Moving back to the country was a dream come true. It was something I had always hoped and prayed I could do but was not sure how it would look career-wise or how it would feel after being gone for so many years. And although I was burnt out. I was so appreciative of each of my clients at the coast. I did not want to desert them. So I went back to school to learn how to code so that I could create a more online, virtual-friendly version of me! Not only did it give my clients the freedom to shop my products without feeling pressured to purchase, and without me feeling pressured to quickly whip up a foundation or lip gloss in two minutes, it allowed me to be much more creative because I was not feeling chronically rushed and frazzled.
It’s like me making you a beautiful pasta sauce, with the highest food-grade ingredients from around the world, and then you, receiving it delivered to your doorstep, trying it and adding a little spice to customize it to your unique preference. Enjoy!
