As a freelance makeup artist I was often feeling the pressure to stockpile when I found a shade that worked well for many of my clients, fearing it may be discontinued. So I do not like to take away the shades my clients use as their go-to shades over the years. Sometimes I have had to alter the shade due to ingredient availability. However, in the beginning stages in 2004, I decided that I wanted to create staples that would be a constant in my clients’ lives, carrying them through school, travel, marriage, babies, life’s milestones, unforeseen tragedies, and all the many seasons of life. Through my own struggles I have found that that one tried and true lip gloss shade can be surprisingly comforting when my life has felt like it is in limbo.

I have done my best to create a full spectrum or range of colour, including the most popular colours that I would make for clients when I worked in spas. I do miss creating new colours together with clients and watching their faces light up as I packaged the shade right on the spot. Something that I found a little stressful in the city is that everyone was always in such a hurry.  I allowed myself to take on my clients’ stress without knowing it. I reached a point of burn out where I just felt pulled too many different directions at the same time. It is like that quote by Harry Connick Jr in hope floats. “You’re talking about the american dream. You find something you love and twist and torture it, trying to find a away to make money at it. You can spend a lifetime doing that. At the end, you can’t find a trace of what you started out loving. What did you start out loving? For me it was doing things right. That’s all. That’s why I came back here. So I could live the way I wanted.” Moving back to the country was a dream come true. It was something I had always hoped and prayed I could do but was not sure how it would look career-wise or how it would feel after being gone for so many years. And although I was burnt out. I was so appreciative of each of my clients at the coast. I did not want to desert them. So I went back to school to learn how to code so that I could create a more online, virtual-friendly version of me! Not only did it give my clients the freedom to shop my products without feeling pressured to purchase, and without me feeling pressured to quickly whip up a foundation or lip gloss in two minutes, it allowed me to be much more creative because I was not feeling chronically rushed and frazzled.

So after reaching that low point a few years ago, I am trying something old in a new way. I have been handcrafting customized shades for my clients since I started my line. Watching my mom always take the time to do her makeup, no matter how hectic things were on our family farm was always interesting to me and incredibly inspiring. My favourite part was when she did her liquid liner amidst the chaos of four of us children and all kinds of animals. My dad actually taught me how to mix colour. Every winter we would sit with our easels by the little wood stove in the basement and paint together. So my passion was to marry those two favourite childhood pastimes. While I feel like I have created an almost perfect range of the most popular shades for all skin tones and eye colours, it is still limited and we are all unique and crave something different. A custom-handcrafted coffee or tea latte will always feel more deserved treat and lovingly created than a ready-made pot. So on top of my ready-to wear products and the custom options I have provided online, you can now also purchase a kit of sample size shade-changers which will allow you to further tweak one of my ready-made shades. If you have been finding a shade is close to perfect but you wish it was a little more pink, brown or coral, or just had a little more pop of colour to it, I can assist you in tweaking the final colour. So I have created and will continue to create customized shade formulas you can follow. If you love a custom shade you see but do not have have the time to custom create it yourself, I can do it for you and share the swatch online for your approval until we get it perfect. If you plan on creating your own shade, you can purchase the full size loose powder shade-changers if you wish, but by purchasing a sample size of each shade changer, you receive just over 10 teeny spoonfuls of each shade-changer pigment to play with. So if you are wanting to just dip your toe in the custom blend world, the samples are the perfect start and you will have enough product for each of the recipes below!
This customizable kit only works for certain products that are simple to add colour to and re-blend. However, if you (or I) create a product shade you really love, using the identical formula, I can recreate it for you with any product texture. Samples will only be offered with the ready-to-wear shades but by starting with a consultation with me (or a refresh consultation), I can recommend the shades I think are best for you and if you feel they are close to a shade you are looking for, that is where the shade-changers will come in handy. It is always easier to create the perfect custom shade for a client who is in my makeup chair in real life. With this new option, you are literally in my makeup chair, I am just guiding you in doing the custom blending for me!

It’s like me making you a beautiful pasta sauce, with the highest food-grade ingredients from around the world, and then you, receiving it delivered to your doorstep, trying it and adding a little spice to customize it to your unique preference. Enjoy!
