custom shade guide

how to adjust your custom blend

use this guide to fine-tune your formula one spoonful at a time. working slowly in natural light will help you create the most seamless and flattering match.

quick shade tips

  1. if your shade is too dark, add brighten.
  2. if your shade is too yellow or too warm, add cool down.
  3. if your shade is too pink or too cool, add warm up.
  4. if your shade is too light or looks pale grey, try warm up first. you may also need darken.
  5. if you would like a more translucent look, add more sheer. this step applies only to select formulas.
  6. the more shade-changer you add, the less liquid your formula will feel and the more coverage it will have.

before you begin

write it down
keep track of your spoonfuls so you can recreate the shade later or request a matching balm or coverage product.
start small
even one or two level spoonfuls can make a visible difference, so add only one spoonful at a time.
keep tools dry
make sure your spoon is completely dry before measuring so the powder does not cling to it.
test in daylight
always test on your skin in natural light, ideally near a window and out of direct sun.
a small swatch on white or clear plastic, or on the back of your hand, can help you clearly see how much the shade has changed from where you started.

mixing a serum formula

  1. gently loosen and remove the rollerball insert or glass dropper top with a butter knife.
  2. set the open bottle in a safe place where it cannot spill.
  3. add one level spoonful of shade-changer at a time using the larger spoon.
  4. mix with a toothpick or the green bamboo stick.
  5. secure the lid and trace invisible lines on the bottom of the bottle for 15 to 30 seconds to help break up and disperse the pigment.
  6. roll the bottle between your palms to finish blending.
  7. when the shade seems close, let it rest for 1 to 2 hours, then mix once more before testing. this helps the colour melt evenly into the base.

mixing a lip glacé formula

  1. warm the tube gently with a blow dryer for a couple of minutes so the contents soften and mix more easily.
  2. remove the applicator and gently take out the inner rubber insert with a butter knife.
  3. place the open tube upright in a narrow, heavy mug to help prevent spills.
  4. add one level spoonful of shade-changer at a time using the larger orange spoon.
  5. mix with the green bamboo stick, tracing circles along the bottom and changing direction often for 15 to 30 seconds.
  6. once the shade looks close, let it sit for 1 to 2 hours, then do a final mix and lip test.
  7. carefully replace the insert and applicator, then roll the tube between your hands before use to keep the colour evenly dispersed.
the more colour you add to your glacé, the less shine it will have.

mixing a powder formula

  1. gently loosen the inner sifter with a butter knife.
  2. pour the powder into the mixing jar over a clean sheet of paper to catch any spills.
  3. add shade-changer one small spoonful at a time using the larger end of the orange spoon.
  4. secure the lid tightly and shake well for about 30 seconds.
  5. repeat only as needed until the tone looks just right.

need help?

if you are not sure what to add, apply one or two thicker swatches to your jawline in natural light near a window, then take a photo facing the light. two photos in slightly different areas are even more helpful.

send your photos through your account order page or simply reply to your most recent order confirmation email.

please include any details that matter to you, such as whether you prefer a slightly warmer or brighter finish, or whether you are trying to cover melasma or another area of discoloration. that extra information helps us guide you toward the most natural and flattering custom match.
